Movie Theater Snack Ordering App: Elevating the Movie-Going Experience

The Problem

During the Google UX Certificate course on Coursera, I identified key challenges surrounding the movie theater snacking experience. Long lines, limited snack options, and a lack of customization diminished the enjoyment for moviegoers. My goal was to design a mobile app that simplifies the snack-ordering process, reduces wait times, and enhances the overall movie-going experience by offering tailored snack recommendations and in-seat delivery.

My Role and Tools

As both UX Designer and UX Researcher, I led this project from concept to high-fidelity mockups. I used Figma to design the app interface and crafted a seamless, user-friendly experience based on real user insights. My responsibilities included user research, wireframing, prototyping, and usability testing, ensuring the app met both functional and emotional needs of the target audience.

User Research

hrough user interviews, I uncovered surprising insights that shaped the app’s design. While I initially focused on the inconvenience of long snack lines, users revealed a range of preferences. Some enjoyed watching snacks being prepared, while others prioritized in-seat delivery and customization. These insights guided the app’s dual offering of traditional pickup and a more personalized in-seat delivery option.

Personas

I developed personas based on user interviews and empathy mapping, which helped define the diverse motivations and behaviors of different moviegoers. For instance, Alya Abed, the 'Convenience Enthusiast', values a smooth, hassle-free snack ordering experience that aligns with her dietary preferences. Crafting these personas helped me align design decisions with specific user needs, such as Alya’s desire for personalized recommendations and fast in-seat delivery.

Iterations

Incorporating usability feedback, I enhanced the app with visually enticing images of snacks, providing a richer and more engaging ordering experience. Users expressed a preference for flexibility, so I introduced the option to toggle between pickup and delivery at any point in the order process. These iterations, focused on visual appeal and user autonomy, significantly boosted the app’s usability and convenience.

The final mockups highlight a streamlined, intuitive experience where users can explore upcoming movie options, redeem rewards, and place snack orders with ease. The design incorporates user preferences for fast navigation, clear visuals, and the ability to seamlessly switch between in-seat delivery and kiosk pickup. The result is an optimized experience that enhances convenience and satisfaction for moviegoers.
